In the academic year 2025, a total of 17 students enrolled in the program: 3 doctor students and 11 master students in the Department of Advanced Energy, and 1 doctor student and 2 master students in the Department of Complexity Science and Engineering.
In the academic year 2024, a total of 12 students completed the program, including 10 from the Master’s Program in the Department of Advanced Energy and 2 from the Master’s Program in the Department of Complexity Science and Engineering.
On Mar. 21, 2025, Prof. Yasushi Ono of the Department of Advanced Energy, who retired at the end of the AY2024 , delivered his final lecture titled “Artificial Sun Development — From Laboratory Astronomy to the FAST Demonstration Reactor” at the Hongo Campus. The lecture, which not only presented outstanding academic achievements but also emphasized that “spirit” is the most essential driving force behind such accomplishments, left a lasting impression on the large audience in attendance. Prof. Hiroshi Yamada of the Department of Advanced Energy delivered his final lecture, titled “Exploring Fusion Science and the Concept of ‘Kiwa (際)’ ”, at the Kashiwa Campus. The event was well attended, with many participants joining both in person and online. In his lecture, Prof. Yamada shared a comprehensive overview of his lifelong engagement with fusion science, from his early days as a student to his latest contributions. Following the lecture, a commemorative party was held, where attendees shared memories with Prof. Yamada in a warm and friendly atmosphere. We invited students from the University of Science and Technology of China to Japan for a week, and they visited the University of Tokyo, Nagoya University and the National Institute for Fusion Science, where they gave research presentations and participated in discussions, and also toured the facilities and equipment. This project was carried out as part of the Sakura Science Program of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
